The classical or Spanish guitar is a kind of etalon and standard, from which guitar masters were repelled in the process of evolution. This is a deep sound with a pronounced middle, a flat wide neck, smooth shapes and strings from a soft material - nylon, which replaced the vein strings. Due to its specificity, it is not as widespread among amateurs as the same western, but it is indispensable when it comes to studying at a music school. Therefore, when choosing an instrument for yourself or a child in order to learn and develop in the direction of the classics, it is definitely worth buying a classical guitar.
Tool sizes
Like many other musical instruments for learning, the "classic" has its own size chart:
1/8 is the smallest, designed for children under 6 years old.
1/2 - "half", suitable for children from 4 to 10 years old.
3/4 - the size is slightly larger than the previous one, suitable for children from 6 to 12 years old.
7/8 - the size is slightly smaller than the standard size, suitable for adolescents and short adults.
4/4 is a standard full-size classical guitar, suitable for adult students of higher education and professional musicians.
You have decided to buy a "classic" for your child. How to determine the size? Which one to choose, “half” or “three quarters”? The check is very simple: with the correct fit, the guitarist's left hand in a slightly bent position should freely reach the fourth string peg.
Sound secrets
If manufacturers of modern types of guitars are not afraid to experiment with wood species, then in the production of "classics" there are clear standards that manufacturers have followed for many centuries.
The top of the instrument is made of spruce (more expensive models) or cedar (budget models). Typically, these are two pieces of wood glued in the middle and reinforced with special wooden beams (springs) inside the body. The decks of the premium class pieces are made from a single piece of wood.
The bottom (back) deck and sides are made of mahogany or rosewood. The neck is made of rosewood or cedar, and the most common fingerboard material is maple. The stand on which the strings are attached is made of harder and more durable species - more often from ebony, less often from rosewood.
Characteristics of the classical guitar
Besides the shape, neck width and string type, there are a few other features that set the "classic" apart from the rest.
Colour. It is extremely rare that the instrument is produced in any color other than natural. This is not only a tribute to tradition, but also the preservation of natural acoustics and overtones. The varnish used to cover the deck emphasizes the beauty and naturalness of the natural color. The appearance of the classical guitar is strict and conservative.
Frets and markings. The neck-to-neck joint “falls” on fret 12 (not fret 14, as in modern models). The dotted frets are either on the side of the fretboard, not on the fretboard, or none at all.
Fastening the neck. Due to the lack of a strong tension inherent in metal strings, on a classical guitar there is no need to adjust the scale. Therefore, the standard models have a glued-in neck without an anchor.
Nothing extra on the deck! If on many guitars the dreadnought and other varieties of the protective plate comes "from the factory", then on the "classics" it is initially absent, because it negatively affects the acoustic properties of the instrument. But if you are using a pick or playing with your nails, we still recommend that you purchase a protective plate for the soundboard so as not to damage or scratch the case.
